Facial recognition vending machines cause stir in Canada

A Canadian university has hit the headlines after a student discovered that its vending machines were using a form of facial recognition, unbeknownst to users. The University of Waterlo is now looking to remove the machines due to the privacy concerns.
The vending suppliers involved have claimed that the facial recognition is used to detect the prescence of a user, rather than capturing or storing any images or videos.
