Japanese vending machines to offer free food if earthquake occurs
15th June 2023
Japan is set to install vending machines that will automatically offer free food and drinks in the event of a major earthquake or typhoon. The machines, which will be installed in the western coastal city of Ako, will contain about 300 bottles and cans of soft drinks and 150 emergency food items, including nutritional supplements.
The machines will be activated by a heavy rain warning or an evacuation order following a quake of an upper five or higher on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of seven. The machines are the first of their kind in Japan, which is one of the world's most seismically active countries.
